Title: Beyond the Prescription - Pharmacists as Champions for Health Equity through Clinical Trial Diversity

UAN: 0215-0000-24-031-L99-P

Description: Individuals from diverse racial and ethnic groups represent approximately 42% of the US population and have disproportionate disease burden for certain illnesses, yet often represent less than 5% of clinical trial participants. Pharmacists can play an integral role in educating patients about the basics of clinical research and raising awareness of trial opportunities, to help ensure medications are studied in the same diverse populations that will ultimately be using the drugs in the real world once they are FDA-approved. This program will provide foundational knowledge on the “state of clinical trial diversity” in the US and a review of how pharmacists can contribute to advancing health equity through inclusive clinical research.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review key terms related to clinical trial diversity, inclusive research, and health equity
  • Describe the latest FDA guidance and legal requirements related to improving participation of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in clinical research
  • Outline trust-based frameworks for optimizing clinical trial diversity and outreach to historically underrepresented communities
  • Recognize the role of pharmacists in advancing clinical trial diversity efforts, based on various practice settings: community, health system, pharmaceutical industry

Speakers:

Camille Pope, PharmD, RPh is the Chief Medical Lead at Acclinate, a digital health company that leverages community engagement and trust-enabling technology to improve diversity and representation in clinical research. Camille uses her 17+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience to develop Acclinate’s medical strategy and lead medical communications between Black and Brown community members, research sites, and pharmaceutical industry/healthcare partners.

She also contributes strategic market intelligence to help further develop the company’s platforms and services. Prior to joining Acclinate, Camille excelled in Medical Affairs roles at various pharmaceutical companies. She was a US Medical Oncology Lead at AstraZeneca (AZ), and a Senior Medical Science Liaison in Virology/Hepatology at Abbvie. Additionally, Camille gained early-career experience in Scientific Publications. Camille is purposeful about fostering diverse talent and striving for health equity through inclusive research. She has established fellowship and scholarship programs aimed at helping students who attend historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) gain experience in pharmaceutical industry. She also served on the Industry Pharmacist Organization (IPhO) Diversity Team and is an active member of the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA) and Young Black Pharma (YBP). At Acclinate, she champions mission-driven projects focused on bringing clinical trial opportunities to communities that have been historically underrepresented in biomedical research, and has presented her team’s efforts at various conferences (e.g., Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation’s Health Equity Symposium and National Pharmaceutical Association’s Annual Convention) and in publications (e.g., DIA Global Forum Magazine). Camille has also shared her expertise on numerous podcasts and webinars and, in 2023, was recognized by the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) as a “Top 40 Under 40 Leader in Minority Health.” Camille earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University and completed a Post-Doctoral Medical Strategy Fellowship with Bristol-Myers Squibb/Rutgers Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowships. She earned her graduate certificate in Health Disparities Research from the University of Illinois Chicago.
