Title: A General Approach to Managing Obesity

Speaker: Jonathan S. Newsome, PharmD, BCGP and NPhA Zone 4 Director

Description: From 1999-2000 through March 2020, the prevalence of obesity in the United States increased from 30.5% to 41.9%. The purpose of this program is to provide a thorough review of obesity management. The audience will learn about: the current state of obesity in the US, the primary factors influencing the development of obesity, weight-related complications, and how to optimally manage obesity via nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment strategies.

Objectives:

1.   Differentiate between overweight and obesity
2.   Identify the stage of obesity
3.   Recommend appropriate nonpharmacological strategies for weight loss
4.   Understand and utilize the clinical pearls for each weight loss medication in a patient case scenario
5.   Recommend appropriate pharmacological strategies for weight loss
